Russia is testing a cash-out service via POS terminals at cash desks.

Vedomosti reports with reference to their sources that Sberbank has already realized several pilot projects and will launch the service in the second quarter of 2018.

The service is designed solely for Sberbank cardholders and will be available only in the bank’s partner shops.

Mastercard is considering introduction of this service in Russia after testing it with several Russian banks.

In particular, Mastercard offers cashing out the funds at cash desks in the following way: first, the client pays for the goods or services via bank card and simultaneously requests the given sum from the cashier. Then the client enters their PIN code and the bank confirms the purchase and the cash-out. However, this service will allow cash-out of a limited amount of money.

Russian media note that Sberbank has tested both the Mastercard method, tied to mandatory purchase, and the method unrelated to making a purchase. The bank has ruled out the latter to be more preferable.

Meanwhile, experts believe that the launch of this service will require changes in current legislation.
