Yerevan /Mediamax/. Ecologists held a protest action in front of the building of government today demanding to stop construction of minor hydropower plant on the Trchkan waterfall.

Ecologist Mariam Sukhudyan told Mediamax that the construction works have already started and the developers want to change the course of the Chichkhan River.

“This waterfall is the second in Armenia by its height and now it is used in private interests”, she stated noting that the construction of the hydropower plant endangers both the waterfall and the local ecosystem.

The participants of the protest action noted that the government had made a decision to recognize Trchkan waterfall as a monument of nature and Armenia’s legislation prohibits any construction works on the territory of monuments of nature.
