Yerevan /Mediamax/. Parliament considered in second reading today the draft law on “Construction of a new nuclear power unit in the Republic of Armenia”.

According to the draft law, the capacity of the new power unit will make 1200 megawatt.

Construction will be realized in accordance with the requirements of the Armenian legislation and the current normative-technical urban development standards and security norms of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

As the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Armenia Armen Movsisyan told Mediamax today, the construction is planned to be initiated in 2012 on the same platform, on which the current Armenian NPP is located. At present, there are preparatory works in process on selecting the project, on ordering the necessary equipment. According to the Minister, the capacity of the new power unit will allow Armenia exporting electricity.

The society and ecology organizations no less than twice a year will be informed by the Armenian government on the process of works on realizing the project.
