Azerbaijani MFA has called on international organizations to “mobilize efforts to shut down the Armenian nuclear power plant.”The Foreign Ministry makes this call in the statement issued on the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day.“Outdated technology and location make the Metsamor NPP one of the most dangerous nuclear power plants in the world,” the statement reads.“Although various international organizations call this facility a threat to the entire region and the service life of the plant has expired, Armenia still operates the Metsamor plant. In 2020, the EU once again called on Armenia to shut down the plant, noting that “this nuclear power plant cannot be upgraded to a level that fully meets international nuclear safety standards, so it must be closed immediately and safely decommissioned.” Outdated technology and failure to adhere to safety rules in the operation of the Metsamor NPP create serious environmental problems for the region,” concluded the Azerbaijani MFA.
