The direct contribution of tourism to Armenian GDP in 2015 was 3.8% or AMD 183.4 billion.By this index, Armenia is the 88th in World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) 2016 report that includes 184 countries.Consider for comparison that the contribution of tourism to Armenian GDP in 2014 was 3.6% or AMD 163.1 billion.WTTC expects direct contribution of tourism to Armenian GDP to increase by 4% in 2016, making AMD 190.7 billion, and reach AMD 279.5 in 2026 (3.8% of GPD). Direct contribution of tourism to GDP includes “internal” spending on travel and tourism, particularly tourists’ spending within the country, and spending by government on cultural or recreational services directly linked to visitors.The total contribution of travel and tourism to GDP reflects the impact that the industry has on the country’s economy on a broader scale (purchase of airplanes, construction of hotels, marketing spending, etc.). This index was AMD 660.9 billion or 13.7% of GDP in Armenia in 2015. It is forecast to reach AMD 685.6 billion (13.7% of GDP) in 2016, and surpass AMD 1 trillion (13.5% of GDP) in 2026. According to the report, travel and tourism generated 40,000 jobs directly in Armenia in 2015, which make 3.3% of total employment. Furthermore, the authors of the report forecast the number of jobs to grow to 41,000 in 2016 and 43,000 in 2026.It is worth mentioning that tourism contribution to national GDP in 2015 was 5% (the 56th place) in Turkey, 2.8% (the 116th place) in Azerbaijan, 2.5% (the 133rd place) in Iran, and 1.5% (the 173rd place) in Russia.
