According to the monthly report by international audit and consulting firm PwC, the market capitalization of the Global Top 100 companies declined by USD 3,905bn (15%) to USD 21,471bn from 31 December 2019 to 31 March 2020.

The report indicates that before the pandemic, from March to December 2019, the market capitalization of the Global Top 100 increased by 20%.

As of 31 March 2020, the report says, Saudi Aramco joined the Global Top 100 this year, having undertaken the largest IPO in history in December 2019. Saudi Aramco’s capitalization made USD 1.6tn.

The second and the third places are occupied by Microsoft and Apple respectively – in the accounting period, the market capitalization of these two companies exceeded USD 1tn.

The capitalization of Amazon, which sits 4th in the list, made USD 971bn. Top five ends with Alphabet holding (Google owner) with capitalizations of USD 799bn.

European companies in the Global Top 100 experienced the most significant reduction in relative terms in the three months, with market capitalization decreasing by 25% (USD 956bn). UK companies in the Global Top 100, with a relatively high Oil & Gas weighting, saw a 28% reduction in market capitalization.

The U.S. continues to dominate the Global Top 100 in terms of market capitalization and number of companies in the list, despite a 14% reduction in market capitalization.

The report also notes that the gap between runner-up China and the U.S. has grown after one Chinese company was excluded from the list this year.

According to recent data, the tech giants mentioned earlier registered a new increase in capitalization. In particular, the capitalization of Apple and Microsoft reached USD 1.5tn, Amazon – USD 1.3tn, and Alphabet – USD 1tn.
