The European Central Bank (ECB) has taken the next step in its digital asset and tokenisation strategy as it launches Pontes, a wholesale settlement solution for tokenised assets. Pontes will enable wholesale tokenised asset transfers to be settled in central bank money, speeding up transactions and making them more efficient by condensing multiple steps of an asset's lifecycle, including issuance and trading to settlement, custody and servicing. At launch, Pontes will initially offer a "core set of services, to be expanded over time in line with market needs and technological developments", ECB stated.Pontes has already been adopted by a group of market participants and DLT operators, such as Deutsche Bank, European Investment Bank, and Clearstream.
