Yerevan, November 21 /Mediamax/. The speeds of strengthening of the Armenian dram with respect to the U.S. dollar are disproportional to the priorities of the economy development of Armenia, the Board Chairman of Armimpexbank Levon Barkhudarian stated in Yerevan today.

Mediamax reports that speaking at the “Friday” club today; Levon Barkhudarian stated that in the conditions of small home market, the emphasis is put on the export. The strengthening of dram, Barkhudarian stressed, destabilizes the export, and on the contrary, stimulates the import.

He noted that there are two ways in this situation: either to hold a fixed exchange rate policy and receive high inflation, or take up the opposite tactics. Levon Barkhudarian expressed an opinion that 7-8% inflation per year is permissible in Armenia.

The Chairman of the Central Bank of Armenia Tigran Sarkisian objected, noting that the high inflation, first of all, causes damage to ordinary citizens.

“One should not stimulate the exporters at the expense of the poor people”, he stressed. Tigran Sarkisian also noted that during the recent years the Armenian dram has strengthened only for 37-40%.He recalled that after the World War II the national currency in Japan valorized for 10 times.
