Russian credit organizations have purchased over 10,000 ATMs with face recognition function, CEO of the ATMs producer VisionLabs Alexander Khanin told Izvestiya.

The ATMs are expected to identify the user by the face and make transactions without the plastic card. However, first the clients have to provide the credit organization with their biometric data, which will be attached to the accounts.

The new generation ATMs will increase the safety of the transactions and make the process faster and more convenient, the experts say. Nevertheless, Russians don’t particularly trust biometrics, so the new service is not expected to be popular in the near future.

Sberbank and Tinkoff Bank have purchased the new ATMs. According to Khanin, they will be installed until the year-end.

Tinkoff Bank has told Izvestiya that the face recognition technology is currently being tested and is available only to the staff of the credit organization. The novelty service is anticipated to fully replace bank cards, in the way that smartphone and bank mobile app generating QR code are used now instead of plastic cards.

Sberbank press service has not announced yet the term of installation of the new ATMs.

Other large banks have expressed interest in biometric ATMs.
